Salt marsh resilience to sea-level rise and increased storm intensity

چکیده
Salt marshes are important ecosystems but their resilience to sea-level rise and possible increases in storm intensity is largely uncertain. The current paradigm that a positive sediment budget supports the survival accretion of salt while deprivation causes marsh degradation. However, few studies have investigated combined impact increased on marsh. This study investigates under various surge (0 m, 0.25 0.5 1.0 2.0 3.0 m 4.0 m) (+0 +0.3 +0.5 +0.8 +1.0 scenarios by using approach hydrodynamic model Delft3D. Ribble Estuary, North-West England, whose been anthropogenically restored high economic environmental value, has chosen as test case. We conclude surges can positively contribute estuarine system promoting flood dominance triggering net import sediment. Conversely, threaten stability ebb export Our results suggest general tendency counteract decrease caused rise. timing relative or low tide, duration surge, change tidal range vegetation presence also cause minor changes budget.

Rapid shoreward encroachment of salt marsh cordgrass in response to accelerated sea-level rise.
The distribution of New England salt marsh communities is intrinsically linked to the magnitude, frequency, and duration of tidal inundation. Cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) exclusively inhabits the frequently flooded lower elevations, whereas a mosaic of marsh hay (Spartina patens), spike grass (Distichlis spicata), and black rush (Juncus gerardi) typically dominate higher elevations. Monito...
متن کاملElevated CO2 stimulates marsh elevation gain, counterbalancing sea-level rise.
Tidal wetlands experiencing increased rates of sea-level rise (SLR) must increase rates of soil elevation gain to avoid permanent conversion to open water. The maximal rate of SLR that these ecosystems can tolerate depends partly on mineral sediment deposition, but the accumulation of organic matter is equally important for many wetlands. Plant productivity drives organic matter dynamics and is...
متن کاملEarly Stages of Sea-Level Rise Lead To Decreased Salt Marsh Plant Diversity through Stronger Competition in Mediterranean-Climate Marshes
Climate change shuffles species ranges and creates novel interactions that may either buffer communities against climate change or exacerbate its effect. For instance, facilitation can become more prevalent in salt marshes under stressful conditions while competition is stronger in benign environments. Sea-level rise (SLR) is a consequence of climate change that affects the distribution of stre...
متن کاملTidal marsh plant responses to elevated CO2 , nitrogen fertilization, and sea level rise.
Elevated CO2 and nitrogen (N) addition directly affect plant productivity and the mechanisms that allow tidal marshes to maintain a constant elevation relative to sea level, but it remains unknown how these global change drivers modify marsh plant response to sea level rise. Here we manipulated factorial combinations of CO2 concentration (two levels), N availability (two levels) and relative se...
